Tours of the Village and Church have already taken place. If any villager wants to take a tour please contact me on 840503 and I will arrange something. Anyone else can contact me, and we can arrange a donation for the Church/Village Hall. Tours will be free for resident villagers. Advertisements for group tours, which on the final advert will include a reference to the book and CD, will read : South Croxton Village Tours South Croxton is a tiny conservation village set on a hill in the heart of typically English countryside. The late Professor W.G.Hoskins said, "Within five or six miles of leaving the city centre (of Leicester) one enters perfect countryside." It is in the middle of this countryside to the north east of the city that South Croxton is located; Professor Hoskins tells us that he loved to visit it at any time of the year. The village of 90 houses and a pub, with three lanes off its main street, has a long history. Founded by the Saxons in the 8th.century, and with a Viking addition later, a church from the early 14th.century, and a mediaeval moated site excavated in 1972, it is almost unique in having two manors. Nobody important or rich ever lived here, so the village has retained its mediaeval size, and the church is unadorned with Victorian memorials. It has its own beauty in being plain and simple, but with a rich history that can be read in its stones. A tour of the village and the church is offered, lasting about two hours. This is followed by a ploughman's lunch, or a reduction of the food bill, at the pub, the Golden Fleece, a typical country pub with a roaring log fire in the winter, and good food, fine ales and good company all year round. To aid those who would find it difficult to walk round the village, or in inclement weather, an illustrated account of the development of the village, its sites and sights, and its history will be given in the church. The tours may be taken at any time by arrangement, and no minimum number is required. The cost per person is £10 Proceeds will be divided between the Village Hall and the Church. Please contact: Phil Snelders, 85, Main St., South Croxton, Leicester LE7 3RL Tel.01664 840503 E-mail:philsnel@aol.com A free tour of the Church will be at the Art and Craft Festival on August Bank Holiday Monday at 2pm, and a tour of the village at 4pm.
